Samsung Develops 21-Inch OLED Display

South Korea's Samsung Electronics has developed a prototype OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display that it says is the largest yet made by any manufacturer.

OLEDs have been viewed as a potential replacement for LCDs and PDPs (plasma display panels) in some applications for several years. OLEDs don't need a backlight and so power consumption is lower than LCDs. OLEDs also are more responsive to fast-moving images, according to the technology's backers. This has made them attractive to portable electronics product makers and flat-panel TV producers.

I've been reading up on this for awhile along with several other up and coming display technologies. What got me on this was the contrast ratio of 5000:1

There are several other interesting display technologies on the horizon too. Many might not go far anywhere soon (for the same reason that there are so many alternate storage technologies other then DVD, but it's become a standard for now).

5000:1? Holy Cow! Most LCDs get around 400-500:1

the screens can potentially be mass produced on Samsung's existing LCD manufacturing lines, the company says.

Probably won't be too expensive to make (not that it'll keep the price down at first).
