Doing one's own taxes?

I've never really had to file taxes until now.. How hard would it be to do my own?

long form is for lots of write offs and such... mostly meaning that you own a house and you are deducting the interest from your income.

if you don't own a house, you probably will do 'short form'

I did mine the other day with Turbotax and it was pretty easy, both federal and state...

You input all your personal info; name, address, SS#, etc.
Then start it. First is income, second is deductions.

So for income, it asks you first to input W2s. Each W2 you may have (2 W2s for 2 jobs, etc) you input each box, then input interest off of savings accounts, etc along with all other investments.

Then you deduct stuff like medical expenses, interest you pay towards house payments, school stuff, etc

It more or less does all the work for you, then you print it off, throw it into an envelope, and mail it.

Hm.. I have no investments, and no deductions that I can think of right off. I might look into Turbotax.

this year I had basically the following:

income:
W2 from my job
interest from savings account

deductions:
went to the doctor once for allergy shot ($15 deductable)
plus 10 miles deducted for driving there (Turbotax asks you and autcalculates this)
$250 undergraduate thesis fee for school (in Feb)
car title fee (some states allow, some don't - Turbotax tells you which one does)
interest on student loans

Everything else was autofilled or you click yes or no and it explains it pretty well...

It should be pretty easy to do... I think Staples has Turbotax for free after rebate and you can get Turbotax State edition for a decent price also. Check around, maybe put a request in the Got Requests? forum

Don't forget online tax software - go to www.irs.gov/efile
Some let you do either state or federal for free.
