Canon I320 Review

Deciding to take another jab at a review editorial to brush up on my ever eroding writing skills, today I decided to take a look at my Canon I320 and finally give it a long deserved critique.

Let me start off this review by stating that I mainly use this printer for printing documents. I rarely ever print out photos on it, because while it can do that I think its main strength is as a budget, light duty, document printer. I think that if you are serious about printing photo quality pictures then you need to be looking at photo quality printers, not that the I320 can’t do this, but it’s not what its primary intention was.

I for one am tired of being gouged big money for printer cartridges. The price of printer cartridges from some brands of printers boarders on being outrageous. Paying $60+ for a color ink cartridge that will either run out very quickly or dry out before you can use it is an aggravation. Happily, this is not the case with this printer. The cartridges are smaller then standard ones, but the black (BCI-24k) costs around $9 and the color (BCI-24C) about $15. Compared to spending $40 and $60 for a Lexmark refill, this is like a breath of fresh air.

This printer is fast too. If you are printing in grey scale to conserve ink, expect it to be even faster. Canon boasts Black : 10 ppm (approx. 5.5 seconds/page) Color : 7 ppm (approx. 8.6 seconds/page). While we found that it wasn’t quite that fast under ideal, real world printing conditions (got more like 5 pages black per minute), it was acceptable and far exceeded our expectations. Just keep in mind that the first sheet printed out will take time to load and print being that the printer heads need to charge themselves with ink before being printed. You may want to keep this to try to do batch printing because you’ll likely be able to stretch your ink further that way as charging up to print just one page is being far more wasteful then charging to print several pages. The text comes out clear and very readable. Pictures are acceptable but NOT what you’d get from a photo quality printer but again, that’s not what this printer was intended for use as.

Now bare in mind the world of the Canon I320 printer isn’t all cheerful and full of glee. It’s got it’s hang-ups. I think one of the more obvious qualities of this printer is that it’s pretty loud. Loud as in I can go to the other end of the hall way and still hear it like it was a feet away loud. Ok, maybe that was a mild exaggeration, but you can hear it through thin walls. Also, this printer tends to border on the flimsy side. After something got jammed in it, we tried to remove it and the inner band came off. This wasn’t a really hard fix, but we were only gently tugging the paper for it to have removed the inner ink drive band. Also, the outer shell is somewhat flimsy as well. With a little effort you can shift the parts and it’s generally made on the cheap, so be sure to keep it in an area where large, heavy object will fall on it and avoid placing it to where it could take a spill onto a hard floor.

Specs:
Up to 10 ppm black / 7 ppm color
4" x 6" borderless prints
600 x 600 dpi in Black 2400 x 1200 dpi in Color
Advanced Microfine Droplet Technology for exceptional photo quality
